The single cassette release. The original Herman's Hermits cassette (from whence the sounds came from) re-used and recorded over with the resulting sounds. Yes, the tape quality will be poor, but that's part of the joy. No-one else on the planet will have this joy. Hand-finished.

about

The Decommissioning History Project is one in which I break apart material and sonic history in an effort to craft a new, improved version; one that considers damages done by hegemonic powers. This project is an inversion of their means of production, their power dynamic, their aesthetic.

The whole series will be a carbon-negative production. As well as offsets being made (in the shape of weekly contributions ($25.00/$1300.00 p.a.) to Carbon Positive Australia, there is limited expenditure of energy, and no expenditure of material production. For example, for this iteration, I rode my bike to Caulfield to pick up the cassette from a guy on Inkerman Street. I then recorded back over it, so the only physical version is the one I bought. The only product available for sale, therefore, is the re-recorded, Herman's Hermits cassette.

I have chosen the Herman's Hermits 'Best Of' album as the source material for my first historical decommissioning project. 'Mrs Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter' is the first piece of music I have deep memory of and connection with. I used to listen to the scratchy 45 on my grandparents' radiogram in Toowoomba. I'd dance around, singing into a microphone made from a pen lid and a piece of string.

There's so much about this song - its identity, my identity - that needs to be decommissioned for the current politic. This work is an effort to correct some of my errors and shortcomings. My history isn't being erased, just decommissioned. You can find it, in parts, disassembled, here. Please, do not attempt to reconstruct.
